There are over 45,000 online job search sites. The sheer scope of coverage is overwhelming, from the local jobs level to the regional jobs level, all the way to the USA jobs level, you can work full time for months and not search them all.

The secret to a good online job search is to narrow the selection down to the best ones, particularly for non-executive positions. As a hiring manager, this is the order in which I’ll post jobs online – it’s therefore the order in which you should spend your online job search time:

The Company Web Site

Newspaper Online Help Wanted Ads

Online Job Posting Sites

As a hiring manager, I’ve asked my Human Resources Department to use many of the large, well known online job sites and I know they can deliver a large number of qualified applicants quickly. So naturally, as a job seeker you should be certain to include these in your online job search, as well as post your resume at a select few.

One thing to bear in mind is that you’re going to find a certain amount of redundancy in the jobs you’ll find online. Many of the job sites use the same job search engines and thus you’ll come across the same job on more than one site. This is simply part of conducting an online job search and one reason why it’s so necessary to be organized and keep good records on the jobs for which you’ve applied.

Remember: as a hiring manager, I will usually disregard applicants that apply twice. If you can’t keep track of jobs you apply for, how will you keep track of your work if I hire you? Yep, we hiring managers are tough!

A Word About Web Site Traffic Rankings for Online Job Sites

There are approximately 56 Million active sites on the Web. In order to make your online job search as efficient as possible, you should use the job search sites with the most traffic, as measured by the Alexa-certified Traffic Ranking (if you download the Alexa toolbar from their site, it will show the ranking of every site you visit). This number represents where each site ranks in traffic, out of all those 56 million sites.

The lower the Alexa rating number, the more popular the site. For example, an Alexa rating of 10 means that site is the tenth most visited site on the web. So, a site that ranks at 560,000 (or lower) is in the Top 1% of all sites.

Many of the online job sites will have an Alexa ranking in the millions, which means they are not getting any appreciable traffic. You want to focus your online job search on job sites that rank at least in the top 1% or better. The lower the Alexa rating number, the more popular the site. The ones with the most traffic, of course, will likely have the most job postings. An Alexa rating of 10,000 or lower is particularly outstanding and means that site is getting serious traffic.

Good luck with you job search, whether online or offline!

If you are employed and would like to move on from your current company, searching for a job while you are employed is difficult. It can be tricky. However, it is possible as long as it is done with respect to your current employers. There are a few key points that need to be considered when engaging in job hunting while you are employed.

You do not want to lose your current job while you are job searching. That means that you must conduct your search confidentially. This means you will need to limit who you tell about your plans. Do not tell the people at your current company or any of the contacts that you have gained from this company.

Also, you will need to make sure that you are using your own time and resources when conducting a job search. You should not be using company resources to conduct a job search. On your resume and cover letter, you should only have your personal information. Use your paid time off for interviews that have to take place during hours you should be working.

If you are using social media sites to conduct a job search, be careful and make sure to update your privacy settings. Also, make sure you are not broadcasting your plans on these sites. Other people can view your comments and information can easily get back to your current company.

Even though you are searching for a job while employed, it is important to remain dependable and trustworthy to your current employer. It is very important to stay silent about your status until you have actually been given a job offer. Once the new job is confirmed, follow the proper steps to leave your current job and give adequate notice that you are leaving.

Searching for a job while you are employed is necessary sometimes. You do not want to burn the bridges and destroy the relationships that you have garnered. Leave your current job with grace and dignity is an indication of how successful you will be at your new job.

The Pre-Requisites of a Job Search Engine – Careers

A search engine indexes online content and provides a quick and easy way to search and access what you are looking for. Google, the most used search engine uses complex ranking to identify the best content, and filter non-relevant and not important content. Google, Yahoo, ask.com are search engines that are horizontal, i.e. they index content across the board. A vertical search engine, is one that indexes a particular type of content, examples are shopping deals, hotel and airline rates, real estate and of course jobs. The touted advantages of vertical search engines are, since they concentrate on a small section of content, they can index more, they can identify more relevant sites and that they are quicker than the horizontal search engine in making content available for search. They make more sense when the content is time sensitive.

The Case for a Job Search Engine

Jobs are an ideal target for a vertical search engine. Jobs are time sensitive, a job posted today is more important than a job posted 60 days ago. A job search engine can target relevant sites, can index faster and make a job available for search faster than a horizontal search engine. A job search engine also makes job hunting easier as all jobs are available at a single site and job seekers can search and identify the best opportunities.

Requisites of a Good Job Search Engine

A job search engine needs to do two things very well to provide more value to job seekers than a horizontal search engine or major job boards, coverage and retrieval technology.

Coverage is defined as the number of jobs that a job search engine indexes, number of sites it indexes and how quickly a job posted in a site (job board or corporate web site) comes up on the job search engine. The number of jobs and the number of sites a job search engine indexes point to how well all the jobs posted in a geographical location and domain is covered. In the case of jobs, coverage needs to go along with speed. A Jobs is a time sensitive commodity. A job which was originally posted 60 days ago is of much lesser importance than a job posted yesterday. Chances are a job posted 60 days ago has already been filled up. So it is imperative that a job search engine index relevant jobs and sites in a way that jobs immediately show up in their index.

Retrieval Technology

A job search engine must provide an easy and effective means of identifying the best jobs for a particular job seeker. Most job search engines have not done any improvement to the core search and retrieval technology currently available on major job boards. They use keyword searches and filters.

A keyword search technically called a “bag of words” search, it splits the content into individual words, eliminate frequently used words like “a”, “and”, “or” etc and put them in a bag. A person searching for a particular word will be given a bag that contains that word.

A job is a highly structured document where some sentences are more important than others. A primary requirement is of more importance than a “nice to have” requirement. Also not all jobs are for everybody. A person with 20 years of experience is looking for a senior level job compared to a person with less than 5 years of experience. These distinctions are lost with a “bag of words” search. Job search engines try to camouflage this by trying to go after the title of the job. This works in certain cases but has a high propensity of risk in missing jobs that are good but does not have the words in the title. This problem is more acute in technical fields like IT, Engineering and Sciences where positions are skill oriented. In these fields a person need to have a certain combination of skills to qualify for a job and keyword searching is woefully inadequate in disambiguating and contextualizing the job requirement and the job seekers qualification.

A one click match that gives the job seeker perfect jobs, is the holy grail of job search engines. For this to work, a job seeker need to supply information more than keywords, a resume would be a good starting point. Just like a resume contains all the information for a recruiter to qualify or dis-qualify an applicant, the match technology should be able to qualify or dis-qualify a job based on a resume. The technology should not require the job seeker to answer pages and pages of questions. The technology should then be able to comprehensively match the jobs to the person taking into account the job seeker’s preferences like location, salary, seniority, travel etc.

A job search engine to be of importance to job seekers, it should have maximum coverage and a retrieval technology that is a one click match to identify the best jobs quickly and easily. Using technical speak, in information retrieval terms a job search engine should have high precision and recall.

A high precision using a match technology that can cut through pages and pages of results to a list of jobs that will pass through the qualifying criteria of the recruiter. Its not whether a job seeker thinks he/she is qualified for the job, its whether the recruiter thinks that he/she is qualified for the job.

A high recall where increased coverage plus not missing out the relevant jobs, results in a list of jobs than when applied to, will get the job seeker an interview.

After all the objective of a job seeker conducting an online job search is to secure an interview and good job search engines do just that.

Becoming a forensic scientist requires several years of study. There are diploma programs that span about one year, an Associate degree program that lasts two years and a Bachelor degree program requiring four years of study. The time projections are based on full-time 12-credit hour semesters. While these programs are very useful, the actual title of scientist is usually reserved for those who plan, research, conduct and record processes. To do this, a minimum of a Master’s degree or higher is required. Students graduating from an undergraduate forensic science program will be eligible to assist forensic scientists, but their duties will be limited. Most scientists have earned their PhD or equivalent Doctoral degree in the program.

Nearly every forensic scientist choosing to complete a Doctoral degree will choose an area of specialty. Specialty areas are numerous, giving students a vast array of choices. To determine which specialty are is best, taking aptitude tests is recommended. Nearly every college campus has these tests, which are available upon request for a minimal fee. After taking the test, students will discover what areas they have a natural strength in. Not all areas are related to human anatomy; fields in electronics, botany, linguistics and even accounting have applications with forensics. For example, if a crime involved a cell phone, the electronics forensic scientist would work on the part of the crime involving that cell phone, being knowledgeable about electronic devices in every way.

In order to become a specialist, a Doctoral degree program must be chosen. Before enrolling in a program, a specialty area should be decided upon. Not every school offers a Doctoral degree in the field desired. Some schools may only offer certain specialty areas or a general forensic science degree. Perform a search for schools offering the specific specialty field desired. After ensuring that the school is accredited, the application process should begin. Students will need to submit all required information and submit background check authorizations. During the course of study, it is important to stay on schedule with assignments; falling behind will lower grades and make studying more difficult. Information must be retained in order to become a successful specialist. Each year, students who have financial aid must submit a new FAFSA application during the summer, preferably early to avoid any hassles. Schools offer job placement assistance for graduates of these programs, so placement services should be utilized for employment.

In today’s economy, it is harder to get a job than ever. With more and more people unemployed, the competition to get a job is fiercer than ever. The job openings are there, that’s not the problem. The problem is that there are a lot of people applying for the same position. For the most part, when an employer chooses who to interview for a job opening, the employer bases his (or her) decision on the cover letters and resumes of all the applicants. For you to secure an interview (which hopefully will lead to a job offer), you need to have a really good letter. This article will provide you with some tips on writing a good cover letter.

First and foremost, it goes without saying that your letter must be mistake-free. Your letter cannot have grammatical errors, misspelled words, or any other typographical error. Whenever I review letters and resumes, I immediately check to make sure that they are mistake free. If I see misspelled words or grammatical errors in a letter or a resume, that applicant already has negative points in my book. Many employers will just throw the letter and resume in the trash.

Second, a cover letter needs to convey why you are right for the job. This step requires you to do a little research into the job opening. Do not send one form letter for every job opening. This will get you nowhere. I tend to ignore applicants who do this when I am selecting people for interviews. Make sure to research the employer and the job opening. In your letter, state why the employer should pick you. You can state how your skills or experience are a perfect match for the job. If you did some research on the employer and found something in common, you might want to list that in the letter.

Third, keep your letter short. Your cover letter should be less than one page. Employers have a lot of letters and resumes to review when picking people for interviews.

When you apply for a job, remember that your resume and your cover letter are the only two things that an employer sees of you when selecting people for interviews. Accordingly, make sure that your cover letter is perfect and shows that you are the right person for the job.
